iRobot Corporation (iRobot) is a Bedford, Massachusetts based company that manufactures robotic vacuum cleaners that contain small battery charger systems (SBCS). From April 2015 through December 1, 2015, iRobot sold or offered for sale 34,089 robotic vacuum cleaners containing non-compliant SBCS in California through various retailers and distributors.

The California Energy Commission (Commission) staff tested two of these units at the California State University, Sacramento - College of Engineering Energy Efficiency Laboratory and found them to be in violation of the Appliance Efficiency Regulations governing SBCS. These SBCS did not meet the energy efficiency standards, were not labeled correctly, and were incorrectly certified to the Appliance Efficiency Database (Database).

To settle this matter, iRobot executed a settlement agreement (agreement) with the Commission on November 20, 2015, for $1,000,000.00. iRobot agreed to reengineer their chargers to comply with the energy efficiency standard, certify each model to the Database, and add the required labeling to the product and packaging. iRobot also agreed to offer a $20.00 rebate to California customers who registered their products by November 19, 2015. This rebate represents the approximate overpayment for energy consumed by using a non-compliant device. This investigation started as a result of an anonymous complaint. The penalty monies are deposited into the Appliance Enforcement Subaccount established by SB 454 of 2011(Pavley).
