Nidec Motor Corporation (Nidec) is a St. Louis, Missouri, based company who manufactures residential pool pump motors. Nidec sold or offered for sale approximately 1600 residential pool pump motors in California, during the time period of January 2013 to December 2016.

This case started as an internal tip from California Energy Commission (Energy Commission) staff. The Energy Commission's testing and investigation process identified Nidec manufacturing and offering for sale residential pool pump motors that did not meet the design standard and were not certified to the Appliance Efficiency Database (Database).

To settle this matter, Nidec executed a Settlement Agreement with the Energy Commission on June 28, 2018, for $115,000.00. The penalty monies are deposited into the Appliance Efficiency Enforcement Subaccount established by SB 454 of 2011 (Pavley). Nidec has also agreed to a compliance plan to implement a labeling program to inform customers of the restriction on residential pool pump motors and to properly test and certify each model to the Database before continuing to sell into California.
