Pilot Automotive, Inc. (Pilot) is a City of Industry, California, based company that manufactures automotive jump starters. Pilot sold or offered for sale automotive jump starters in California, during the time period of January 2014 to August 2017.

This case was the result of an anonymous complaint. The Energy Commission's investigation and testing process identified Pilot manufacturing and offering for sale automotive jump starters containing a small battery charger system that allegedly did not meet the energy efficiency standards, was not marked properly and was not certified to the Modernized Appliance Efficiency Database System (MAEDBS).

To settle this matter, Pilot executed a Settlement Agreement with the Energy Commission on November 28, 2018, for $44,355.00. The penalty monies are deposited into the Appliance Efficiency Enforcement Subaccount established by SB 454 of 2011 (Pavley). Pilot has also agreed to a compliance plan to discontinue sales of noncompliant models into California, add all required marking, and certify each model to MAEDBS before continuing to sell into California.
