Techko Maid Inc., an Irvine, California based company that distributes robotic vacuum cleaners using small battery charger systems, sold 450 non-complaint units in California between February 2013 and March 2016. The California Energy Commission (CEC) staff tested one of these units at the California State University, Sacramento-College of Engineering Energy Efficiency Laboratory and found it to be in violation of the energy efficiency regulations governing small battery chargers. The CEC staff notified the distributor, who then instructed all retailers to stop selling in California. The company is now in compliance. To settle this matter, the company executed a settlement agreement with CEC on July 28, 2016 for $13,500.00. The penalty was reduced due to financial hardship evidenced by Techko Maid. The penalty monies are deposited into the Appliance Enforcement Subaccount established by SB 454 of 2011 (Pavley).
