W.W. Grainger, Inc. (Grainger) is a Lake Forest, Illinois, based company that distributes pool pump and motor combinations (pool pumps), replacement pool pump motors (pool motors), evaporative coolers, portable luminaires, and state-regulated light emitting diode lamps (SLEDs). Grainger sold or offered for sale these products in California, from July 2015 to November 2019.

This case was the result of an industry complaint. The California Energy Commission's investigation and testing process identified that Grainger was distributing and offering for sale pool pumps and pool motors that did not meet the design standard and were not certified to Modernized Appliance Efficiency Database System (MAEDbS) and evaporative coolers, portable luminaires, and SLEDs that were not certified to MAEDbS.

To settle this matter, Grainger executed a Settlement Agreement with CEC on June 17, 2020, for $125,399.00. The penalty monies are deposited into the Appliance Efficiency Enforcement Subaccount established by SB 454 of 2011 (Pavley). Grainger has also agreed to a compliance plan to implement measures to restrict sales of non-compliant pool pumps and pool motors, and to test and certify all models of regulated products to MAEDbS before continuing to sell in California.
