California appliance regulations, combined with federal standards, set minimum efficiency levels for energy and water consumption in products, such as consumer electronics, household appliances, and plumbing equipment. Annual gas savings from recent California Energy Commission (CEC) standards reached $520 million dollars during the year 2025.

This dashboard tracks the impacts of the 3 most recent efficiency standards put into effect by the Appliance Efficiency Program, including Air Filters, Residential Faucets, and Showerheads. These metrics reflect the impact of actions taken by the CEC from 2006 to 2026, building on a legacy of improving performance and reducing utility bills via cost-effective minimum standards stretching back to 1978.

Title 20 Statistic Dashboards in this Collection:
Appliance Standards Savings | Appliance Standards Electricity Savings | Appliance Standards Gas Savings | Appliance Standards Water Savings | Appliance Standards Avoided Air Pollution

Terms:

  • Million therms (MM therms) represent a million therms. A therm is a unit of heat energy equal to approximately 100 cu ft of gas or one hundred thousand (100,000) British thermal units.
  • Billion gallons (B gal) — Signifies one billion gallons of water. One billion gallons of water is about equal to 1,534 Olympic swimming pools.

Information
Recently adopted California’s Appliance Efficiency Program Standards over the last 10 years are responsible for gas savings of $520 million during the year 2025 via cost-effective minimum performance standards.
