The California Residential Appliance Saturation Study (RASS) is a comprehensive study of residential sector energy use. The California Home Energy Survey is the primary data source for the RASS. The study supports the CEC’s energy demand forecast model for the residential sector, which feeds into the energy demand forecast for the whole state. The study is conducted periodically, with three previous studies completed in 2019, 2009 and 2003. The CEC manages the study in collaboration with investor-owned and publicly owned utilities.
Goals and Objectives:
- Calculate appliance saturations by home type and fuel use at the forecasting climate zone.
- Calculate estimates of annual energy use for appliances by home type and fuel use at the forecasting climate zone.
- Enhance the RASS data and incorporate advanced metering infrastructure electricity consumption data into forecasting model input and development.
- Track technology adoption throughout California’s electrification transition phase.
- Provide the public and interested parties with up-to-date residential saturation and consumption data, collected and analyzed through the RASS.
