California Energy Commission staff, in consultation with Navigant Consulting, Inc., will conduct a workshop to summarize the research ideas submitted for the Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Research Roadmap, discuss the screening process, and share the preliminary scores and ranks of the research ideas. The project staff will discuss the next steps in the process and the remaining timeline for the DER Research Roadmap. This is the second of three public workshops to develop and prioritize DER research recommendations.

Agenda

Following the July 25, 2019 workshop, Energy Commission staff and the project team reviewed the research ideas submitted, applied the preliminary screening, and scored and ranked them pursuant to the DER Research Roadmap methodology.

The workshop will review the work completed by Energy Commission staff and the project team subsequent to the July 25, 2019 workshop, and invite public comment and feedback on that work. Staff will discuss how the process has advanced; the initial feedback; the next steps in the process; and the remaining timeline for the DER Research Roadmap. This workshop will provide an opportunity for subject matter experts in attendance to provide additional feedback on the urgency and priority on the identified research needs. Participants are expected to include DER providers, aggregators, developers, researchers, utilities, and end users. The information gathered will help inform research priorities for future grant funding opportunities through the Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC).

Staff is seeking input on:

  1. Does the screening and prioritization of research needs accurately reflect the needs of California?
  2. What alternatives or changes to the already-performed screening and prioritization should Energy Commission staff and the project team consider before creating the first draft of the DER Research Roadmap for public review?
