California Energy Commission staff will conduct a workshop to discuss energy stakeholders’ needs for hourly temperature data to be available on Cal-Adapt, a web-based platform, for use in forecasting.

Agenda

Energy sector stakeholders have expressed interest in having sub-daily temperature projections as well as observed historical temperature observations made available on Cal-Adapt. This meeting will describe relevant hourly temperature data products of two research projects supported by Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) program funds and will explore user needs in relation to these data, which could be made available on Cal-Adapt. Presentations describing the hourly data will be given by:

  • David Pierce and Dan Cayan of Scripps Institution of Oceanography on the generation of future projections of hourly temperature over California at 29 meteorological stations used for energy demand forecasting in the state.
  • Owen Doherty of Eagle Rock Analytics on a curated repository of hourly weather observations at 39 locations across California for the period 1973-2019 which was produced after careful data quality review.

The presentations will be followed by a guided discussion session, asking participants from the energy sector to provide input on:

  • Their needs and potential uses for the historical and projected data,
  • Processes by which similar data are obtained at present,
  • Their present (and potentially future) needs for frequency at which datasets are to be updated,
  • The approach by which the hourly temperature data are made available on Cal-Adapt for download and for supporting further analysis.

The resulting input will be used to determine which dataset(s) should be made available on Cal-Adapt, and how Cal-Adapt can support efforts and/or ongoing coordination between institutions (e.g., one possibility might be by providing a continuously updated, quality-assessed and quality-controlled hourly temperature data set).

Research suggestions can be provided to our Research Idea Exchange Docket: https://efiling.energy.ca.gov/Ecomment/Ecomment.aspx?docketnumber=19-ERDD-01.
