Annual Exemption Requests due by June, 1
Reporting exemptions are not permanent and must be renewed each year. Supporting documentation will greatly expedite our review process. Ex. Photos or floorplans demonstrating >50% gross floor area dedicated to manufacturing/lab. Important: Noting you received an exemption in the prior year is not sufficient reasoning.

California Building Energy Benchmarking Exemption Request

You may submit exemptions for prior years if desired. Due to application surge, prior year’s applications will only be reviewed after the current year has been processed. Exemption eligibility criteria are in the FAQs.

Unable to submit prior to the deadline?
You may request a reporting deadline extension. Be prepared to provide reasoning with supporting documentation to sufficiently prove you took timely actions to comply, circumstances beyond your control are what prevent timely compliance, and to provide a reasonable date or estimate of when you can comply with the requirements.

NEW for 2023
Starting in 2023 and continuing each subsequent year, you must add a benchmarking reference number (BRN) to your report.  Use the building's address to look up the BRN.  For more information, visit the benchmarking frequently asked questions section "Do I Need a Building Identification Number From The Energy Commission to Report My Building?"

For additional information on benchmarking your building, visit the Resources section at www.energy.ca.gov/benchmarking, or contact the Benchmarking Hotline at Benchmarking@energy.ca.gov or (855) 279-6460.
