Local jurisdictions wishing to enforce locally adopted energy standards that exceed the current energy code are required to apply to the California Energy Commission (CEC). Local jurisdictions must demonstrate their local ordinance, or reach code, saves more energy than current statewide energy standards and is cost effective.

California appliance regulations, combined with federal standards, set minimum efficiency levels for energy and water consumption in products, such as consumer electronics, household appliances, and plumbing equipment. The Building Energy Benchmarking Program requires owners of large commercial and multifamily buildings to report energy use to the California Energy Commission by June 1 annually. Please visit the Building Energy Benchmarking page for more information on the program and reporting requirements.
